About

Named after a machine that turned light into sound.

The name

In 1913 the physicist Edmund Fournier d’Albe built the optophone, a device that scanned printed text with light and turned the letters into tones, so that blind readers could read by ear.

Optophone borrows the name as a nod to that old idea: that light and sound belong together. Here the sound comes first, made live on your device, with generative light beside it if you want it.

What we will not do

No ads

Not in the free tier, not anywhere. Premium is a paid upgrade, never a way to remove ads.

No account wall

Open the app and press play. An account is optional and only syncs your mixes.

No medical claims

Optophone is for relaxation and entertainment. We describe sounds by what they are, never by what they promise to do.

No surprises with your data

Usage analytics are off unless you turn them on, and the Privacy Policy says plainly what is collected.

Who makes it

Optophone is made by Umbrisk Studios LLC, an independent studio. Questions, ideas or press: hello@optophone.app.

Coming soon to iPhone, iPad and Android.

Optophone is not in the App Store or Google Play yet. When it arrives it will be free to install, with no account needed to start — 35 sounds free forever with no ads, and Premium for the rest.
