FAQ
Common questions, plainly answered.
Is it free?
Yes — 35 sounds, 8 preset scenes and 10 visualizers are free forever, with no ads, no time limit and no account. Premium (a monthly or yearly subscription, or a one-time lifetime purchase) unlocks the full catalogue — all 1,264 sounds, all 110 scenes and all 1,298 visualizers.
Do I need an account?
No. The app works without sign-up from the first launch — no email, no password, no friction. You can optionally sign in with Apple or Google later to back up your mixes and sync them across devices.
Does it work offline?
Once anything you want to hear has downloaded, yes. Everything the procedural engine makes is synthesised on your device and needs no connection at all. The sounds built from real recordings download once on first use — until then they stay silent — and afterwards they play offline like the rest. Cloud sync needs connectivity; playback does not.
Why does it not loop?
A looped clip is something the ear catches quickly. Optophone runs everything through a live engine instead — procedural sounds synthesized moment by moment, and real instrument and animal recordings re-sequenced so they do not settle into a loop. The rain hits different leaves each second; the wind shapes a different gust each minute. The result is audio that keeps changing for as long as you keep it playing.
What about subscription cancellation?
You can cancel at any time. On iOS, manage your subscription in Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions. On Android, in the Play Store under Profile → Payments & subscriptions. Subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled at least 24 hours before the renewal date. The lifetime purchase is one-time and has nothing to cancel.
Is this for sleep or medical conditions?
Optophone is for relaxation and entertainment only. It is not a medical device, not a therapeutic tool, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition. If you have a sleep disorder or other health concern, please consult a qualified professional.
Can I delete my account and data?
Yes. In-app, go to Profile → Account → Delete Account. We also accept deletion requests by email at privacy@optophone.app. See the Account Deletion page for details on what gets deleted and when.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets.
What is the difference between Synth and Real sounds?
Many instruments and animals come twice. The Synth version is generated entirely by an audio engine; the Real version uses recordings of the real thing, re-sequenced live so it keeps changing. Both sit side by side in the catalogue.
Does it keep playing with the screen off?
Yes. Sound keeps playing in the background and on the lock screen, with media controls. Some battery-saver settings can pause background audio; Support explains what to check.
Can I share a mix?
Yes. Save a mix and share it as a link; anyone with the app opens it in one tap.
Can I turn the visualizers off?
Yes. Choose none and the screen stays dark while your sound plays. If you are sensitive to light or motion, read the photosensitivity guidance first.
What languages is it in?
English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Hindi.
